Karma Bavaria sits at Kirchbichlweg 18 in Schliersee, an alpine resort of 88 rooms and suites in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, a short walk from the shore of the lake. The interiors lean into cosy alpine warmth, and the facilities run deeper than the quiet exterior suggests. There is a heated pool fed by a waterfall, an open-air soaking pool, a sauna and steam bath, and a Karma Spa treatment menu. Downstairs sits a bowling lane, a games room with billiards, darts and table football, and a library stocked with books and vinyl.

The town of Schliersee wraps around its lake about 90 km from Munich by road, close enough to the train station that a car is optional. Summer is for rowing on the lake and hiking the trails up toward Schliersbergalm; winter brings the Spitzingsee-Tegernsee ski area a short drive away. Neighbouring Tegernsee is worth an afternoon for its abbey brewery, and the Rotwand trails above Spitzingsee reward the climb with a view across the valley. King Ludwig II’s castles, Neuschwanstein among them, make a full day out, as do Salzburg and Kufstein over the Austrian border.
